TEARS | Saved from tragedy

Thanks to the lifesaving efforts of TEARS, neglected pooches Thelma and Louise are on the road to a full recovery and a happy life ahead.
Rescued in late January from Hangberg township in Hout Bay, Thelma and Louise have been given a new lease on life. Both dogs were found in a sorry state, with Thelma in dire need of emergency veterinary treatment.
The TEARS Veterinary Team found Thelma had a severe case of sarcoptic mange, advanced ear infections, was underweight (14kgs), infested with fleas and ticks and had been used as a puppy factory — having litter after litter of puppies. She was also suffering from erhlichia (a life-threatening tick-borne disease).
Thelma was immediately put on a course of antibiotics to fight the erhlichia in order to save her life. For her terrible ear infections, she had daily ear ointment and enjoyed bi-weekly baths in medicated shampoo to soothe her skin. Enjoying a diet of Hill’s Derm Defense to boost her recovery, Thelma’s fur soon grew back full and luxurious.
After six weeks, Thelma is unrecognisable. She’s flourished at TEARS — changing from a coy, bashful girl to a friendly, outgoing and loveable lass — and she and Louise now look forward finding their forever home.
