Helping change the future of young learners for life, 50 new Dream2Teach Scholarships and work placements are growing new motivated and professional teachers.
South Africa is short of 20% of the teachers it needs every year to maintain an effective teacher pupil ratio. And, in a sector that’s burdened by high levels of teacher absenteeism and disengagement, many of the best teachers end up leaving to teach internationally. Thanks to MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet funds, 50 more internships and work placements will go a long way to unlocking the true potential of every child in South Africa. The South African education system is riddled with crumbling infrastructure, overcrowded classrooms, and poor educational outcomes. And it is the poorest children who are hardest hit. In a country where only half of learners are predicted to pass their matric, the lack of foundational concepts in place by age 8 has a clear impact on their future success. The key to changing this lies in the hands of our teachers.
Investing in future minds The latest investment in 50 scholarships covers tuition fees, books and stationery along with teaching support and coaching. These scholarships will be supported by key partners Realema and St Peter’s Internship Programmes. Realema’s offers comprehensive bursaries to talented and hard-working black students, who could not otherwise afford a tertiary degree, to study for a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree — while gaining valuable, best-practice work experience as full-time teacher interns at their top partner schools. St Peter’s Foundation gives its interns an opportunity to be exposed to specialised and directed teaching practices in each point of focus as they are rotated between schools during their four-year experience. “A good head and good heart are always a formidable combination. But when you add to that a literate tongue or pen, then you have something very special.” Nelson Mandela
