SOS Children’s Villages SA | Children need a loving home
SHARE THIS INSPIRING STORY ON
For over 30 years, SOS Children’s Villages SA has been caring for children without the security of family — to give them the best chance at reaching their full potential.
Through its alternative model that blends residential and foster care, SOS Children’s Villages South Africa has been looking after children who have lost (or risk losing) parental care. Its goal is to provide a supportive environment that enables children to thrive!
As an independent, non-governmental organisation, SOS was established in 1984 and is an active advocate for child protection and the rights of SA’s most marginalised children. At its core lies the belief that children can only develop to their full potential if they have a supportive and protective family environment. To make this a reality, SOS’s 11 programmes across eight provinces provide each child under its care with a loving home, access to education and health care.
Every year, life-changing support is given to children and families across the country through its Family-like Care and Family Strengthening programmes:
The Family-like Care model comprises of four principles that include a mother (each child has a caring parent), brothers and sisters (the family ties grow naturally), a house (a secure place to grow up in) and a village (the SOS family is part of the community).
Family Strengthening is focused on working with disadvantaged families to prevent crises that lead to family breakdowns — offering various forms of support to build the skills and capacity of parents, SOS families, social workers and other caregivers in the community.
Above all, SOS Children’s Villages puts each individual child’s needs first, to ensure they enjoy positive and caring relationships.
