Mission Green | Greenpop

Africa’s urban spaces are set to expand by over 700% by 2030. On its mission to green, Greenpop is helping plant trees and grow green communities with sustainable family food gardens.

As the world’s most rapidly urbanising continent, urban populations across Africa will more than double between 2000 and 2030.

As an award-winning registered non-profit organisation, Greenpop is hard at work. Its mission: to plant trees, green communities and empower environmental stewards across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Founded in 2010, with its headquarters in Cape Town, South Africa, Greenpop has planted over 150,000 trees and inspired over 132,000 active citizens across South Africa, Zambia, Malawi, and Tanzania.

In January, Greenpop hosted its first Family Food Garden programme workshop of the year with 20 participants from Christel House.

The Family Food Garden project aims to address food inaccessibility and financial insecurity, by equipping individuals with the skills to sustainably grow their own food at home. Greenpop has partnered with Urban Harvest to deliver in-person and digital training, as well as Family Garden Pods, to people who participate.

The Family Garden Pod is a compact, self-contained vegetable gardening system that includes a composting worm farm and vegetable garden. During the workshop, beneficiaries received their Pods, training materials, and planted their first seedlings — and the team is so excited to see how these gardens flourish!

Through efforts like forest restoration, urban greening, food gardening, and environmental awareness projects across Sub- Saharan Africa, Greenpop is helping restore ecosystems and empower environmental stewards — to protect essential natural assets and incorporate them into urban landscapes.
