Thanks to a generous donation by CHEP, Christel House South Africa will keep its lights on and save on electricity. CHEP — a leading international supply chain solutions company —donated a new solar power system which includes 110 solar panels and powers 45 kilowatts of energy. That means Christel House — a non-profit school situated in Ottery, Cape Town — is now able to cut its carbon footprint, save electricity costs and keep the lights on during load shedding.
CHEP used a local South African company, MLT Drives, to manufacture and install the solar system and all materials used were locally manufactured in South Africa, further supporting the local economy. CHEP strongly advocates sustainable ways of doing business and, as VP Hermann Haupt explains, the donation of a state-of-the-art solar system ties in with their goals of going beyond ‘zero impact’, “Our mission is to positively impact the communities in which we operate. At the same time, we’re delighted to help such a wonderful school become more sustainable and help transform the lives of the students they serve.”
As well as saving Christel House a significant amount in operational costs every year, Chief Finance and Operations Officer Shereen La Fleur says it’s an excellent educational opportunity to teach their students more about sustainability and a career in the green economy. Christel House South Africa is a non-profit school with a single mission: to break the cycle of poverty. It offers no-fee scholarships to students from some of Cape Town’s poorest neighbourhoods and supports them for 18 years (Grade R to Grade 12 and five years post-matric) through character-based and career-focused education. The school’s beneficiaries include 740 students from grade R to 12, 250+ post-matric students and more than 3000 parents and other members of the communities it serves.
