Steps Clubfoot Care | Step by step

Through vital treatment and support, Steps Clubfoot Care is helping give more children the mobility they need to reach their future potential.

Steps Clubfoot Care is giving more children the chance for a life free from disability. Established in 2005 by a mother of a child with clubfoot, Steps Charity NPC is a healthcare support organisation with a focus on families and the patient’s journey.

Steps believes every child should have the same access to quality clubfoot care. Every day brings more success stories of children who have been treated in partner clinics, and Steps shares its stories of hope to encourage more parents to bring their children for early treatment.

Children like little Atang, whose mother Tumelo found immense comfort in the supportive community at the Steps Clubfoot Care supported partner clinic in Soweto, Johannesburg.

Tumelo says: “Atang started walking at 18 months old. I cried when he stood and took his first steps. The support from STEPS has been amazing. I encourage new parents not to despair and keep on the programme even when it is tough. Being in the programme was also a huge financial burden lifted off my shoulders. I don’t have medical aid and would never have been able to afford the private fees. The experience has restored my faith in the public health system.”

Its clinic support programme works in partnership with 37 clinics all over South Africa — from small rural clinics to large city hospitals. To date, more than 15 000 children have had access to the life-changing Ponseti treatment for clubfoot, introduced to South Africa by Steps’ founder and readily received by our health professionals in the private and state sectors.

Karen Mara Moss, founder of Steps: “It is a constant source of happiness to me running Steps. Every parent I meet and child I see at the clinics we support reminds me of my start on the clubfoot journey, when I was so worried about my own son’s future. Being able to share in their happiness and see their little babies grow into active running toddlers is a testament to the impact that this treatment has on lives. It is not only giving children mobility, but the parents are relieved of their burden and worry, and every successfully treated child has the opportunity to escape the cycle of poverty, go to school and eventually contribute to our country.”
