Shine Centre

Established in 2000, The Shine Centre, 2010 WISE Awards nominee and winner of the 2008 Institute for Justice and Reconciliation Award, is a non profit organisation that provides literacy and language enrichment to children in Grades 2 and 3 through regular volunteer-led tutoring.

With the slogan ‘Words can Change Worlds’, Shine encourages children, parents, communities and businesses to work in partnership towards securing a better education for the children of South Africa and creating a nation of readers.

With five flagship centres and over 300 trained volunteers, Shine has also had many requests from schools, individuals and other NGO’S to share its model. Through their Outreach programme they are now taking their methods, materials and expertise to wider audiences enabling the establishment of more literacy centres.
