Animal Anti-Cruelty League
The Animal Anti-Cruelty League has been protecting and caring for animals since 1956. It is South Africa’s second largest independent animal welfare organization, relying entirely on the generosity and goodwill of the animal-loving public for financial support.
They:
- Provide shelter for abandoned animals through an efficient adoption programme
- Prosecute animal cruelty cases
- Run welfare hospitals for lower income groups
- Their Education Officer regularly visits schools, introducing learners to the work of the League, the services they provide, and the importance of responsible pet care
- Some branches visit underprivileged areas with fully equipped mobile clinics
They have branches in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, Durban, Pietermaritzburg, Ladysmith and Bredasdorp.

Community Service (Johannesburg branch)
The Animal Anti-Cruely League offers Community Service/volunteer programmes for adults and children wanting to spend time with animals, at their Johannesburg branch. Children who need to perform community service for their school are also accommodated in this volunteer programme. Companies that need to fulfil certain social responsibility criteria can get involved with team building/ corporate puppy socialization mornings, which are offered by the League.
Survival
A large portion of the Animal Anti-Cruelty League’s funding comes through gifts and donations from animal lovers who have known the love and devotion of pets. Debit order donations also ensure a continous cashflow. Membership to the AACL and bequests are other ways you can support them.
