Food and Trees for Africa

Food & Trees for Africa (FTFA) is South Africa's national greening social enterprise that started in 1990 to address global warming and now develops, manages and promotes greening, climate change action, sustainable natural resource management and food security programmes.

Over the past 22 years FTFA has distributed over 4.1 million trees, facilitated the development of over 2 500 natural food gardens for the poorest in South Africa, and launched the first carbon calculator and the Carbon Standard in this country.

FTFA's objectives are:

• to contribute to greening, climate change action, sustainable natural resource management and food security;
• to create an awareness of the benefits of environmental improvement activities amongst all communities of southern Africa;
• to contribute to poverty alleviation, enhanced environments, capacity building and skills development, many for people living with Aids

They also work in partnership with the government, the private and public sectors and civil society to achieve these aims.

FTFA implements four programmes, namely: Trees for Homes and the National Tree Distribution Programmes that link to the Carbon Standard, Urban Greening and Food Gardening, and the Woolworths Trust EduPlant, each with many projects.

Many companies, government departments, aid agencies, organisations, media and individuals now contribute to FTFA, supporting programmes or projects that are leading to healthier lives of impoverished communities, more sustainable green environments and increased awareness of our impact on the planet and the need to address this.
