Three new schools in the Western Cape now have their own access to water, thanks to the LOVEH20 WATER FUND and Woolworths. Since it started in March 2018, the team has been hard at work to achieve its dream of empowering under-resourced schools in South Africa, with an improved water infrastructure.

Nederburg, Dalubhule and Magnolia Primary are three such schools located in the Cape Winelands. Collectively catering to over 3000 primary school learners from grade R – 7 and 191 educators, the schools also provide learners with two meals a day through the National Schools Nutrition programme.

Each of these schools has been given two water tanks, with a total storage capacity of 40 000 litres of water. Given the recent drought in the Western Cape, access to water has been an ongoing issue in the community. With their new tanks, the schools will be able to sustain themselves in times of drought, while reducing their dependence on municipal supply of water and operational costs. Other water collected in these tanks can be used for drinking, cooking, cleaning, ablution facilities, and the watering of food gardens – where the food that’s grown supplements the school nutrition programme, or is sold to the community to raise school funds.

The money raised through the LOVEH2O WATER FUND through MySchool has seen the following upgrades being made to their facilities:

•   Supply and installation of rainwater 2 x 10 000 Litre water tanks systems into the school’s kitchen

•   Supply and installation of rainwater gutters and downpipes

•   Electrical work for pump and filtration systems

•   Makeover of vegetable garden where possible

•   Install and  secure filtration systems and booster pumps

•   Provision of replacement consumables

•   Installation of taps (where applicable)

Having already completed work in three primary schools in the Normandien area of KwaZulu-Natal, and now the Western Cape, the team will be turning its attention to schools in the Eastern Cape – for schools in Kwazakhele in Port Elizabeth.
