| Free as a bird – World Egg Day |
|
We’re very proud of the fact that since 2004, all the eggs on the shelves at Woolworths have been free range. In fact, Woolworths are still the only retailer to exclusively stock free range eggs.
Offer valid from 5 to 25 October, 2009, while stock last. Buy here.
The eggs you buy at Woolworths – including our free range organic and free range omega-3 eggs – have been laid by hens that are free to roam outdoors (with access to shelter and plenty of food and fresh water) and behave the way hens do naturally. All our free range eggs are traceable and come from suppliers who are independently audited to ensure they comply with a strict code of practice. It’s all part of our Good Food Journey – our continual quest to offer food that’s better for our customers, better for the environment, and better for the people who produce it.
What about our organic eggs? They’re laid by hens that eat an organically certified vegetarian diet. And if you’re wondering why the yolks of our organic eggs are paler, it’s because the diet is wheat based. Oh – it’s also important to note that our organic egg suppliers are certified by Ecocert, an international organic certifying organisation. Woolies, of course, is totally committed to quality, which is why all our eggs are selected, Grade 1 eggs, and why every single egg (except our free range omega-3 eggs and organic eggs) has a sell-by date stamp on it – in food-grade ink. It not only guarantees freshness, it also helps you know which eggs to use first once you’ve taken them out of the carton to store in your fridge!

You’ll also be pleased to know that there are no animal by-products or fishmeal in the feed our laying hens eat, and that they’re fed a strictly vegetarian diet of grains and pulses. The hens that lay our free range omega-3 eggs eat a diet enriched with omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E and organic selenium. Omega-3 fatty acids are not naturally produced by the human body so it’s essential for us to include them as part of balanced diet. Vitamin E is an important antioxidant that also protects the omega-3 fats, while selenium is vital to the natural “detox” process in the body and acts as an antioxidant which neutralises harmful free radicals.
