| MySchool Woolworths Newkidz Extreme Makeover: 470 volunteers, 4 days, one big thank you! |
|
These funds have now been used to make a very meaningful difference in the local Ottery community. With the help of Newkidz on the Block, an NGO specialising in extreme makeovers for dilapidated properties that are home to children in need, MySchool and Woolworths have decided to transform St George’s Home for Girls. The home is situated between Ottery and Wynberg in the Cape region and is currently the only residential care facility in the area that cares for abused, abandoned and homeless girls. St George’s Home has a legacy of more than 140 years and currently cares for up to 40 girls, aged between 3 and 18. MySchool and Woolworths decided to invest in this home for many reasons. The home does amazing work. They are dedicated to finding new homes for the girls, integrating them into the local community (the girls attend school, do extra-mural activities and go to church), and also providing them with various life skills such as interview skills, computer training and more. The home’s manager Greame Cairns told us after the makeover that “This has been a dream come true. You plan ahead and imagine how you will have to do various fundraising project to do sections of the home over the next 4 or 5 years. What we have done is do all these project in only 4 days!” The Extreme Makeover saw the participation of various sub-sponsors and over 470 volunteers. 618 shifts were filled over the 4 and a half days during March – some of the hottest days thus far this year! Lagoon Beach Hotel offered to house the girls and staff during the makeover – a brilliant experience for all of them! They never knew how much work was planned for the home. Therefore, upon their return on Sunday afternoon, the girls were completely surprised by the massive changes. The highlights were the new laminated flooring, beautiful new bedding and towels (sponsored by Woolworths), wall murals in their recreation room and outside, the bigscreen TV, freshly painted interior and rooms in lovely fresh colours, the “salon” room where they could run their own beauty salon, the new cupboards and lights. The home was completely transformed. To see more photos of the volunteers in action visit our Facebook Gallery.
