Amy Biehl Foundation: an evening of magic an illusion

The Amy Biehl Foundation hosted its annual gala fundraising dinner on Saturday, 7 November 2009 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre to raise funds to sustain and grow their programmes in the townships in and around Cape Town. Through ticket sales, pledges, a silent and a live auction, the Foundation managed to raise R518 000. It was an evening of magic and illusion with magician Larry Soffer, a belly dancer, stilt walker, entertainment by the Original Tons, the children from the Amy Biehl Foundation music and dance programmes, Sibongile Khumalo, Yvonne Chaka Chaka and Aviva Pelham. Joey Burke did a wonderful job as auctioneer, as did Colin Moss and Gerry Elsdon who were MCs.

The Amy Biehl Foundation is a non-profit organisation whose programmes are designed to develop and empower youth in the townships and aim to reduce the levels of crime, gangs, drug abuse, HIV Aids and violence and to give children a brighter future. This is achieved by providing educational and cultural activities that offer students healthy alternatives to crime, drugs, sex, idleness and negative influences, unlocks their creative talent, giving them opportunities to become future leaders, entrepreneurs and well rounded citizens. Programmes reach over 1 500 children every week, and include:

  • After School Centres
  • Creative Arts including sketching, painting, beading & pottery, Drama and Dance (Kwaito, Modern, Traditional, Contemporary & Ballet)
  • Sports including soccer, hockey, kickboxing, cricket, swimming, diving, surfing and the first and only Golf Driving Range in a township
  • Music including Violin, Guitar, Recorder, Marimba, Choral Singing, and Brass Band
  • HIV / AIDS Peer Education
  • Greening & Environment
  • Youth Reading Role Model Literacy

We could not have done this without the wonderful support we received from supporters donating their time, services, auction items and prizes.
