ChildlineChildline's Vision Statement

Working collectively to promote a culture of child rights.

Childline's Mission Statement

The establishment of a culture of respect for all children's rights as outlined in the South African Bill of Rights and Constitution is essential to the continued wellbeing of our communities and the future stability of our country.

Violence against children and young people, whether emotional, physical or sexual, constitutes a gross human rights violation that impinges on the right to equality, human dignity, security, privacy and ultimately education.

These factors limit children and young people's capacity for growth and development. Challenging this violence and ensuring their emotional physical and sexual safety facilitates the achievement of their maximum potential.

To this end Childline is committed to:

  • Develop support services and resources to respond to the survivors of such child rights violations;
  • Contribute to societal transformation through development, advocacy and training, the primary focus being to challenge the laws and practices that support violence against children and young people;
  • Network with all stakeholders in the field to combat violence against children and young people;
  • Research current trends in the field of violence against children and young people within the South African context.

The services Childline offers

  • The key Childline projects all link to form a basket of services that are able to meet the needs of children in a comprehensive manner.
  • Our Community Awareness and Prevention Project offers prevention and teaches children the toll free number of our 24-Hour Crisis Line.
  • The volunteers on the Crisis Line ensure that every child's story is heard and where necessary protection services are requested.
  • The face-to-face Counselling Project in each of our satellite offices (Tembisa. Soweto, Sebokeng, Katlehong and the Inner-city) offers long-term support whilst the Sunlight SafeHouse (now a semi-independent organisation operating under the auspice of Childline) provides short-term foster care for children when their home circumstances are not conducive to their rights.
