Last December, the independent fundraising initiative MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet in association with kalahari.com challenged the public to donate books as part of its ‘Spirit of Giving’ online campaign. The result saw The Shine Centre, a volunteer driven NGO in the Western Cape that provides literacy and language enrichment support to second language learners in Grades R to 3, receive in excess of 284 books and a R20,000 donation from MySchool and kalahari.com.
“Encouraging children to read from an early age is pivotal for their future development and the growth of our country,” says Pieter Twine, general manager of MySchool. “The Shine Centre believes that words can change worlds and they have seen the first hand proof of that statement. What’s more, The Shine Centre will use the R20,000 to purchase Xhosa books; supporting and cultivating one of our country’s richest heritages.”

“Thanks to the kind generosity of kalahari.com customers, we are proud to participate in the Spirit of Giving campaign and delighted to deliver much needed books to the Shine Centre this year,” says Liz Hillock, Head of Marketing for kalahari.com.
