Operation Smile South Africa (OSSA) Operation Smile South Africa (OSSA) is a non-profit, volunteer medical services organisation that provides free reconstructive surgery to children and adults born with cleft lips and/or cleft palates, or any other correctable facial deformity.

OSSA’s mission: that no child in any community should have to live with the pain and isolation caused by a correctable facial deformity. OSSA has conducted medical missions in South Africa, Madagascar, Namibia, Rwanda, Swaziland, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

To date OSSA has provided free surgeries to over 2 500 patients.

The facts: One in every 10 babies born with a cleft lip and/or cleft palate die in their first year. Surgeries take as little as 45 minutes. The average surgery costs as little as R3 000. The difference a surgery will make to one child: lifechanging!

While OSSA places significant emphasis on its medical missions, it has also provided training to healthcare professionals in all of the above-mentioned countries as well as Lesotho. To date OSSA has provided free training to over 1 000 healthcare professionals.
